Gravel Driveways
We build new gravel driveways and parking areas and regrade worn ones. The stone gets a crown so rain runs off to the sides.

Site prep gets a lot ready for a new building. The house pad is the level, compacted ground the foundation sits on. Blackwell's Land Management builds house pads and building pads around Duncan and across the Upstate. We build them for new homes, garages, barns and shops.
We do site prep for builders and for owners building on their own land. An overgrown lot needs land clearing first. Then the smooth bucket on our compact track loader cuts and fills the pad to grade. When the pad is compacted, the lot is ready for the foundation crew.
Tell us about the land and what you want done with it. We look at it and put the quote in writing.
Every house pad starts with the footprint. The brush cutter takes down brush and small trees where the building will sit. The grapple pulls small stumps and loads the debris for haul off, or piles it where you want it.
Next comes the cut and fill. On sloped ground, the smooth bucket cuts dirt from the high side and fills the low side. The pad is brought to grade and then compacted.
Last, we shape the driveway entry so trucks can reach the pad. Greenville County's single-family erosion rules call for a stabilized construction entrance before any delivery or construction. Later, a gravel driveway can go in on that same entry.
Footings need firm ground under them. The residential building code in South Carolina says footings rest on undisturbed natural soil or engineered fill. Fill that holds up footings has to be designed and tested by accepted engineering practice.
A slab on the ground has its own rules. The code calls for the plants and topsoil inside the foundation walls to come out. Fill under the slab must have no roots or trash in it, and it gets compacted for even support.
Our part ends with a compacted pad and a site ready for the foundation crew. A foundation contractor then builds the foundation. Where the soil is in question, the building official decides whether a soil test is needed. An approved agency runs that test.
Cecil soils make up about 61 percent of the land inside Duncan's town limits. That figure comes from the USDA soil survey for Spartanburg County. A typical Cecil soil has about 8 inches of sandy loam over red clay.
The largest soil areas in town are mapped on slopes of 2 to 25 percent. A pad on sloped ground takes more cut and fill than a pad on flat ground. Moving dirt also changes where rain runs. Our drainage and culvert work gives that water a path off the lot.
South Carolina law calls for a locate request to South Carolina 811 before grading with machines. The request goes in at least three working days before the work starts. Utility companies mark only the lines they install and maintain. A private water line stays unmarked, and a contract locator can find it.

The brush cutter takes the brush and small trees down. The grapple pulls small stumps and gathers what was cut.
The debris is hauled off or piled, the way you chose. The open ground is then ready for the next step, like grading or a house pad.

We fix yards and lots that hold water after a rain. A French drain or a regraded slope moves the water off, and culvert pipe carries it under the drive.
