Land grading reshapes the ground so it is smooth and water runs where it should. Blackwell's Land Management grades yards and lots across the Upstate of South Carolina. We cut the high spots down and fill the low ones. When the work is done, the ground slopes away from the house.
Many land grading jobs follow land clearing around Duncan. Once the brush and small stumps are gone, we shape the open ground for what comes next.
Tell us about the land and what you want done with it. We look at it and put the quote in writing.
Most land grading starts with rough grading. The smooth bucket cuts the high ground down and carries that soil into the low spots. Finish grading comes last and leaves an even surface for seed or sod.
We grade yards that sit uneven or hold water after a rain. We also regrade land after clearing and level the spot for a shop or barn slab. A parking area or a farm lane that will carry stone is part of our gravel driveway work.
Our grading is done with a compact track loader and a smooth bucket. As a grading contractor, we work for homeowners, landowners, builders and businesses.
In yard grading, the ground next to the house matters most. For new homes, South Carolina's residential code sets the slope. The ground must fall at least 6 inches within the first 10 feet of the foundation. That rule is written for new houses, and it makes a good yardstick for an older yard too.
Low spots are the other half of the job. A dip that holds water after every rain can be filled and blended into the slope around it.
Sometimes a lot line or a wall leaves no room for that 6-inch fall. In that case, the code calls for a swale or a drain. Both are part of our drainage and culvert service.
Cecil soils cover more of Spartanburg and Greenville Counties than any other soil, federal soil maps show. In the Spartanburg County soil survey, Cecil's sandy loam topsoil is only about 3 to 6 inches thick. Red clay sits under it, and on eroded slopes that clay is at or near the surface.
Thin topsoil is worth saving. On a big regrade, the extension service's lawn guide says to set the topsoil aside first. It goes back over the ground once the rough grade is set. The guide also warns that rough grading can pack the subsoil down, more so when the ground is wet.
