Drainage and Culverts
We fix yards and lots that hold water after a rain. A French drain or a regraded slope moves the water off, and culvert pipe carries it under the drive.

Blackwell's Land Management builds gravel driveways around Duncan and across the Upstate. We cut new driveways and parking areas for homes and businesses. We also regrade worn gravel driveways that rut and wash out. Farm lanes and gravel pads are part of the work too.
If brush or small trees stand in the way of a new route, our land clearing opens the path first. On a new build, we can shape the driveway entry while we build the house pad. Our skid steer and its smooth bucket do the shaping and the gravel spreading.
Tell us about the land and what you want done with it. We look at it and put the quote in writing.
Gravel driveway installation starts with a look at the land. We see where the driveway will run and where the rain goes. Then the quote comes to you in writing.
After you say yes, the route is cleared and the soft topsoil comes off. We shape the ground and cut the entry at the road. Then the stone goes down, and the smooth bucket spreads it.
We grade the stone with a crown, a gentle high line down the center that sends rain to the sides. State agency guides call for a rise of about half an inch per foot toward the center. On a 12-foot driveway, that puts the center about 3 inches above the edges. Steep stretches may need about three quarters of an inch per foot.
Everyday traffic flattens a gravel driveway and pushes the stone out toward the edges. Once the crown is gone, rain stands in the low spots or runs down the middle. That is where ruts and potholes start.
Driveway grading puts the shape back. We pull the stone from the edges back to the center and cut down the high spots. Then fresh stone goes on the thin places, and we grade the crown again.
Sometimes the water comes from the yard beside the driveway. Land grading can reshape that yard so the rain stays off the driveway.
Around Duncan, the USDA soil survey maps most of the ground as Cecil soil. The Spartanburg County survey shows a few inches of sandy loam over red clay. On eroded slopes, that red clay sits at or near the surface.
The NOAA station at the Greenville-Spartanburg airport records about 50 inches of rain in a normal year. About 14 days a year bring an inch or more. A gravel driveway here has to shed a lot of water.
Creek bottoms along the Tyger rivers map as Toccoa and Chewacla soils. In Chewacla soil, the water table can sit 6 to 24 inches down from November to April. State driveway guides tie a soft driveway to a base set too low for the water table. On ground like that, the stone base needs to sit higher.
